Lynn University honored its 2013 NCAA Division II National Championship Women’s Golf Team today (Sept. 12) at a lunchtime pep rally in the Elmore Dining Commons on campus.
“These young women won the program’s fourth championship title and our university’s 21st national championship title when they beat Nova Southeastern by three strokes last May, said Ross. “I just love when we unseat former national champions,” he said.
The team members Estafania Buritica, Nezha Haddioui and starters Jessica Bradley, Irene Calvo, Ellen Chambers, Louise Manolo and Samantha Smolen were introduced and each was congratulated by President Ross as he handed them their championship plaques.
Ross enumerated some of the other records the team set: All 5 starters earned All-American honors, marking the fourth time in NCAA Division in history a school had five All-Americans and the first since the 2009-2010 season. These five also garnered scholar All-American honors while the team finished sixth in the nation among all four-year institutions with a 3.737 grade point average.
Lynn’s women’s golf head coach Danny Randolph spoke of his pride in the team who “did so well at the biggest moment of the year.”
The 2013 NCAA Division II runner-up men’s golf team was also recognized.
"Our men’s golf team made a valiant effort as they just missed out after tying in match play but falling short in the aggregate score against Barry University,” said Ross.
