When the curtain rises

Elaine's Musical Treat, created by the late Jan McArt and longtime Lynn University donor and friend Elaine J. Wold, has grown to be one of the most beloved theater experiences at the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center. Since its inception in 2005, the four-day signature show takes place annually and brings professional actors, Lynn Drama and the Lynn University Conservatory of Music together for a magnetic weekend of musical art.

For the first time in 2022, Lynn's B.F.A. in drama students began producing the musical with professionally trained actors. Elaine's Musical Treat now gives aspiring actors the opportunity to get involved in all aspects of the production, from performing to backstage work.

"This is a golden opportunity for our students," said Adam Simpson, professor and drama department chair. "Elaine's Musical Treat is a showcase for our students' talents, and it provides them with an invaluable opportunity to work with industry professionals and gain exposure to the world of theater."

Elaine J. Wold, who is the show’s headline sponsor, believes the collaboration is a driving force for the future of theater. "I believe that the arts have the power to transform lives, and I'm thrilled to be able to support the next generation of theater professionals through Elaine's Musical Treat," she said.

Students steal the show

CristaMarie DeVito '22, B.F.A. in drama graduate, recalls her experience performing in the 2022 production of Gigi. She showcased her own abilities and gained valuable insights to shape her future career. "The experience of working with professionals in the industry was priceless,” said DeVito. “It gave me a taste of what it's like to work in the real world of theater and helped prepare me for my career."

Since its inception, Lynn's drama department has made students the priority. Simpson and faculty members give students authentic theater experiences that allow them to thrive both artistically and academically. Their hands-on learning was apparent at the 2023 Elaine's Musical Treat production, 42nd Street. Instead of bringing in outside professional actors and resources, the production was built around Lynn's own talent—a community of drama students ready to entertain the masses.

Simpson received an influx of interest from students who wanted to be part of the annual show. The cast rehearsed, sang and learned choreography together in the hopes of bringing 42nd Street's characters to life.

"Students had a valuable experience and learned collaboration, cooperation and participation,” said Simpson. “We are proud of their achievements and the ultimate success of 42nd Street.”

Lynn's drama curriculum prepares students for success. In addition to the rigorous acting, voice and creative classes students take, performing in a highly visible production provides an extra layer of expertise to students' résumés.

Elaine's Musical Treat and other theater productions at Lynn have become a staple in the Boca Raton performing arts community, and donors like Elaine J. Wold make it possible for students to reach their dreams.

The future of Live at Lynn is bright. With both new and cherished yearly productions, Lynn's drama program provides our aspiring student actors the platform to demonstrate their abilities.

And, donors make it possible. Donations, big or small, provide scholarships and essential resources for productions. "Our patrons' unwavering support for our student musicians and actors never goes unnoticed," said Lisa Miller, director of advancement.
