Lynn University bids farewell to Fighting Knights mascot "Big LU"
Published Oct. 23, 2014
Everyone at Lynn University is familiar with Big LU. The loveable Fighting Knights mascot has been a staple on campus since his introduction in 2006. Big LU will be laid to rest on Monday as Lynn prepares to unveil design plans for a new mascot at Lynn’s annual Founders Day celebration a few days later.
Big LU will go out in style during LynnKnight Madness Monday, Oct. 27, an evening organized to kick off the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. As part of a week-long Halloween celebration of spooky good fun, Big LU will lay in wake inside the de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center, providing the Lynn community an opportunity to say goodbye. Following the game, a procession of student athletes will carry Big LU’s coffin to Bobby Campbell Stadium, where he will rest in peace.
The Lynn community feels this resting place is a fitting tribute to the mascot who brought so much joy, and where Lynn students will continue to celebrate sports for years to come. It also will resurrect the former soccer field’s nickname, “the graveyard,” where the Lynn Fighting Knights have “killed” the competition. The question, of course, is … what happened to Big LU?
“It was his time. He lived a long successful life at Lynn and we’ll never forget the spirit he brought to the field and the university,” says Athletics Director Kristen Migliano. “With the launch of our new Fighting Knights brand, we thought now was the proper time to bring a fresh face to Lynn athletics.”
Students are invited the following day to join Big LU’s spirit in the graveyard and cheer for the women’s soccer team as they take on Nova Southeastern University. Limited-edition graveyard t-shirts will be distributed to the first 100 students in attendance.
