On Saturday, May 30, at the 2009 College World Series, Lynn’s baseball team won a pitcher’s duel with 2-1 victory over Emporia State to claim the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship. This is the first national crown for the baseball program and 19th title in school history.
Once the final ball of the game was safely in the glove of Lynn’s second baseman, the Knights poured out onto the field and piled on one another just behind the mound in celebration of their first national championship.
“What a great experience,” said head coach Rudy Garbalosa. “What a credit to these guys. They did such a great job, the 14 seniors and the rest of the team, they really pulled together. I was just happy to be a part of this.”
Lynn went 8-0 in the NCAA South Region and National Tournament, defeating eight consecutive nationally ranked opponents and closing out the year 23-6 against teams ranked in the top-25. The Fighting Knights were ranked No. 1 in the second week of the season for the first time in program history and now finish the season as the top-ranked squad, also a program first. Overall, the Fighting Knights finish the season 46-16.
