Learn about living systems
Biological sciences is the study of life, living organisms and the environment. As a biological sciences major, you'll study anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. Plus, you'll learn about all organisms and microorganisms—from animals to plants.
Earning a degree in biological sciences qualifies you to enter a diverse range of career fields, such as medicine, biotechnology or research. It's the perfect stepping stone to pursue your Ph.D. or to advance your studies in health, biomedical and biological sciences.
The biological sciences program offers a one-year course-based option with a health and medical focus or a two-year research-based option with a research and biotechnology focus. Not sure which one to choose? The health track helps you apply the concepts and principles of biology to clinical practice. The bioscience track provides rigorous research training and the experience necessary to enter the professional world or continue your education to a terminal degree.
No matter what, you'll gain skills in scientific inquiry and written and oral scientific communication skills to advance your career to the next level.

This course examines basic concepts of mechanistic toxicology, including distribution, cellular penetration, metabolic conversion, and elimination of toxic agents, as well as the fundamental laws governing the interaction of foreign chemicals, with biological systems. In exploring these topics, students will review current topical research to understand the tools and methods used to examine toxic responses.
Humans and other mammals are made of a diverse array of cells. To function properly, each type of cell must maintain its architecture while communicating with its neighbors. Further, the cell's function is strictly regulated. This course examines key aspects of a cell's biology, including cellular structure and membrane dynamics, communication between and within cells, and regulation of the cell's life span. In exploring these topics, students will critically evaluate current research to understand the tools and methods used to dissect cellular biology.
Issues in bioethics considers activities in the Biomedical field that raise moral perplexity about the rights and duties of patients, health professionals, research subjects, and researchers. This course addresses ethical theories and presents a set of readings on issues in medical ethics including abortion and infanticide, problems of birth defects, euthanasia, genetic editing and control, and artificially ending and preserving life.
