Alumnus George Mavrookas brings hospitality to healthcare

Hailing from a lineage of Greek American restaurant entrepreneurs, George Mavrookas '04, '05 inherited an enterprising spirit from his grandfathers, who started out with just pennies in their pockets and were able to achieve the American dream of financial success within a decade of immigrating to the United States. Since then, Mavrookas chose to reinvent his family's traditional recipe for success, steering his path away from the restaurant industry and into healthcare. Mavrookas combined his educational foundation from Lynn, his entrepreneurial foundation, and a commitment to community service to establish Agape Behavioral Healthcare—a substance abuse and mental health treatment provider in South Florida.

Creating a community of hope

Since opening in 2017, Agape's mission is "to be a guiding light on the path to recovery and wellness for those struggling with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders." Having treated thousands of clients since opening, Agape has done precisely that. Mavrookas' journey in the business realm began at Lynn, where he earned his bachelor's degree in business administration and finance in 2004, followed by an MBA in marketing in 2005. As the founder and driving force behind Agape, Mavrookas translated his passion for helping others into a personal approach to behavioral health, bringing hospitality concepts into healthcare.

Mavrookas' vision emphasizes a personalized and compassionate approach to all clients. The company operates with the belief that clients are not patients but individuals seeking a safe space for healing and transformation. "Similar to a boutique hotel, we prioritize individualized care, ensuring each client receives the attention and support they deserve," said Mavrookas. "Our team is deeply invested in understanding the unique needs of every person we serve."

In addition, Agape treats their employees with the same respect as their clients. The company earned recognition as one of South Florida Sun Sentinel's Top Workplaces for 2023 and one of five companies to receive a specialization award. Agape employees remark on the company culture as being very positive and uplifting. Staff members and clients are all involved in an environment that embodies a healthy mind, body and spirit.

Inspiring future healthcare professionals

Agape has had over ten interns from Lynn's clinical mental health counseling program, with two currently completing internships. In addition, four of the therapists who work in Agape's facilities are Lynn alumni. Mavrookas plans to continue to partner with the Lynn community to give more opportunities to students who want to work in the field. He recalls his experience at Lynn and how it's helped pave the way to where his career is today. Mavrookas has already started discussions to return to campus and speak to current MBA students. "Lynn helped shape my perspective," said Mavrookas. "It was a very insightful and pleasant experience for me."

Currently, Agape employs 80 team members at their two locations. This year, they are set to expand their reach by opening a third facility, Agape Behavioral Center, which will be focused on primary mental health. Mavrookas is determined to continue to make a positive impact in South Florida and is forward-thinking about new opportunities. "I always wanted to start something meaningful and helpful for the community. At Agape we feel blessed and privileged to do the work that we do daily to serve others," said Mavrookas.

Mavrookas' story is a testament to the transformative potential of combining education, entrepreneurship, and a deep sense of social responsibility. As Agape continues to shine as a guiding light on the journey to recovery, Mavrookas remains at the forefront, steering the course toward a future where healthcare is not just a service but a compassionate and personalized experience for all.
