First-year students ring in each new year with the Citizenship Project, an initiative that’s part of Lynn University’s January Term (J-Term) and impacts local organizations through service. Although travel for community-based activities was restricted, students and faculty remained committed to giving back.

The first week of Lynn’s three-week J-Term took place online and then students came together in the classroom and across campus to work on their projects. This year’s Citizenship Project highlights include:

  • Three classes worked together to create social media advertisements to raise awareness of dogs available for adoption at Big Dog Ranch Rescue.
  • Students created stories and lesson plan videos for elementary and middle school students, addressing United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal No. 4: Quality Education.
  • Sustainability projects included mulching the Olewine Preserve, clearing the fire lane path, tending the butterfly garden, and cleaning up litter and plastic waste. Students also wrote letters to government officials regarding the environment.
  • Students packed Comfort Cases filled with pajamas, blankets, handwritten cards and other items for local children in foster care.
  • Five classes got creative during J-Term by painting murals and participating in spoken word that addressed UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 14: Life Below Water.
  • Presentations to Boca Save our Beaches proposed ways to educate local youth on ways to be more sustainable and to help keep the local beaches and shorelines clean.
  • Students took part in National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) “share circles” and hosted a no-contact food drive to benefit Boca Helping Hands.
  • Several classes also used video, social media and other marketing tactics to raise awareness about human trafficking with Place of Hope; to develop ways to minimize plastics and other hazardous waste from beaches with the Turtle Trash Protection Program; and to share about life in college with youth at Best Foot Forward.
