New history book tells the Lynn University story

History of Lynn University honors the legacy and celebrates the future of the Boca Raton college
The Ross family

Lynn University is an institution with a rich and storied history. It was built on determination and the power of curiosity.

“We have a remarkable history of strategic bets that paid off,” said President Kevin M. Ross. “We’ve always punched above our weight, and our campus has quickly grown up, especially following the presidential debate. As we continue to evolve, it’s important that we capture our legacy from the perspective of those who helped create it.”

In 2016, the university commissioned the Write Stuff to tell Lynn’s story, which began in 1962 when a congregation of nuns migrated to South Florida to establish a college in Boca Raton. Years later, President Emeritus Donald Ross and his wife Helen took a chance on the small college, vowing to save it from closing.

College Reimagined: The History of Lynn University describes the college’s entrepreneurial spirit. It chronicles an educational revolution that embraced challenges and bold ideas that continue to make the school stand out among its competitors.

Donald Ross today recalls that spirit and smiles. “We were doing things that people didn’t do back then. We have always been an international school—the nuns taught and cared for migrant children. We studied abroad long before it was a thing—we brought students to Boca Raton to study.”

A key theme of the Lynn story is the people that created it.

“This book tells the story from the people who were part of it. It’s realistic,” Donald Ross added. “We are a community of people that is taking care of another community of young people. I hope that never changes.”

Today, Lynn is a nationally-recognized institution that provides an innovative, global and personalized education that enables students to realize their potential. Its mission is driven by the belief that the Rosses instilled years ago: Every student has unlimited potential when given the proper tools and an opportunity for a great education.

“We’re always talking about the future, but we need to remember where we’ve been and celebrate it,” said President Ross. “This is a moment for us to recall the history that continues to define our future.”
