Student achievement

Lynn University evaluates success with respect to student achievement consistent with its mission: to provide an innovative, global and personalized education that enables students to realize their potential. Lynn University believes in every student’s potential to graduate within eight years, and selected the modified IPEDs eight-year graduation rate as its Key Student Completion Indicator as the primary indicator of student success. This measure is publicly available through the National Center for Education Statistics website: nces.ed.gov.

Choosing the graduation rate is also consistent with our strategic plan, Lynn 2025: Design for the future.

"Create and implement models to support students and improve retention and graduation rates" is the first point under Priority 1: Engage with our constituents to further foster our culture of pride, loyalty and support.

"Increase graduation rates to align with industry benchmarks" is listed under Priority 2: Elevate the Lynn experience, building on our strong foundations to continually improve and adapt.

Consistent with the mission and strategic plan, Lynn University set a minimum threshold of acceptability at 42%; the eight-year graduation rate from five years ago. Lynn's target is the overall graduation rate of peer institutions—54%.

Lynn University’s current overall rate is just short of the 52% target. At the current rate of improvement, the university expects to reach its target within two years with the 2013 cohort.

Eight-year graduation rate

Cohort year Graduation rate
2008–2016 43%
2009–2017 46%
2010–2018 45%
2011–2019 52%
2012–2020 56%

Disaggregation of data

The following table show the eight-year graduation rate data disaggregated by ethnicity and gender, and is consistent with IPEDS reporting. Students self-report their ethnicity on their admissions intake form. Every student attending Lynn University on a student visa is coded as "nonresident alien." If a mixed-race student selected "Hispanic" and another ethnicity, they were coded "Hispanic of any race."

"Race and ethnicity unknown" includes students who chose not to disclose their ethnicity. There are no double-counts; if a student selected "Asian" and "Black," they were coded as "two or more races."

The table below shows the graduation rate disaggregated by ethnicity for each cohort year.

Secondary measures of student achievement

In addition to the graduation rate, scores on the CLA+ exam help gauge student achievement. This performance-based exam assesses critical thinking, analytic reasoning, problem-solving and writing. It is used to measure the growth in learning between freshmen and seniors. Every other year, approximately half of the freshmen class takes the exam early in the fall semester; seniors in capstone courses take the exam in the late spring. The target is for seniors to perform at a statistically higher level (z > 1.96) than freshmen.

The minimum threshold of acceptability requires seniors to perform at the same level as incoming freshmen. As shown in the analysis, in all categories of the exam, performance task, selected response and overall, seniors performed at a significantly higher level than freshmen.

CLA+ scores

Overall Performance Selected
Freshmen 920 906 934
Senior 1091 1071 1110

Madison Natural World Test

In even academic years (2018–19, for example), the Madison Natural World Test is administered to freshmen early in the fall and to seniors late in the spring. The Madison exam alternates with the CLA+ exam (odd academic years), and is used to measure scientific and quantitative reasoning. The minimum level of acceptability requires the average scores of seniors to be at the level of average freshmen scores. The target is for the seniors to score higher than the freshmen.

This selection provided a sample of all the majors (n=89). The following table shows the average scores of both groups. Seniors scores higher than the freshmen, so the target was met, but it was not a statistically significant difference (α = 5%).

Freshmen Seniors
Quantitative reasoning 44 47
Scientific reasoning 50 54

Full-time employment rate

As reported by the National Association of Colleges and Employers the 2018 average full-time employment rate was 58.7% for 2018 bachelor degree graduates.

Lynn University's full-time employment rate for 2018–2019 bachelor degree graduates exceeded the target at 64%. Ninty-two percent of the graduating class reported they were accepted to graduate school or employed.

Other measures of student achievement

Each college maintains records of student achievement as is appropriate to each college and major.

College of Aeronautics
The primary measure of the aviation program’s success is the FAA checkride pass rate. The threshold of acceptability is 80%the minimum FAA checkride pass rate for certificate renewal. Lynn’s College of Aeronautics target pass rate is 95% based on historical performance—well above the national average of 85% and above the FAA required minimum. As reported for the 2020 FAA renewal, the checkride pass rate was 95.3%

College of Arts and Sciences: Master's in psychology
Lynn’s master’s degree in psychology has an empirical thesis requirement since academic year 2018–19, which must be written per American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines. Students are required to earn a minimum score (70/100) on the thesis to "pass" the thesis and complete the program. For this standard, targets are set based on the percentage of students who earn the minimum score on their thesis in order to pass. The minimum performance level is 77% (national completion rate for online degree programs). The target performance level is 91% because that is the average completion rate for psychology master’s programs (APA, 2016). Lynn’s actual performance level was 96% in academic year 2018–19

College of Arts and Sciences: Master's in clinical mental health counseling
Graduates of the master's degree program in clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) take examinations to demonstrate knowledge of the field and meet national certification and licensing requirements. To graduate from the program, students must pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) and given the opportunity to take one of two national counseling examinations: the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) to meet certification and licensing requirements.

The minimum performance level for the CPCE is 80% total, and subscores will be at or above nationally standardized score. The target performance level is 85% total, and subscores will be at or above nationally standardized scores. Over the last three academic years (2016–19), students in the CMHC master's degree program have achieved between a 90%–100% pass rate on the first or second attempt on the CPCE.

For the NCE/NCMHCE, the minimum performance level is a national average pass rate of 50%. The target performance level for these tests is a 70% pass rate. The average pass rate is 77% for the last three years.

Clinical mental health counseling summary:

  • Program graduates in the past year: 28
  • Completion rate of students who entered CMHC: 92%
    • Completed CMHC program: 70%
    • Completed related graduate program at Lynn University: 22%
  • Licensure/certification pass rate of graduating students: 77%
  • Job placement rate of graduates seeking employment: 80%
(does not include those seeking terminal degrees)

College of Business and Management
Students from the Lynn University's College of Business and Management have demonstrated learning success in multiple measures, including the following:

Competitions
International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE) Case Competition:

  • Fourth place in academic year 2019–20
  • First place in academic year 2018–19

Capstone simulations
Students in the MBA capstone course, MBA 690, participated in a simulation activity with Capsim.com. Student teams within the class compete against each other and scores are compared against a national average based on other concurrently participating institutions across the country. The simulation tests each student team’s knowledge in six areas of business, including strategy, finance, accounting, operations, human resources and marketing. The minimum target goal for the College of Business and Management was to see continued improvement in the overall scores for each of the six business areas. The ideal target goal was for each student team to score within 10 percentage points of the national average in each functional area of business. In the 2019–20 academic year, students achieved the following scores.

Functional area 2019–20 MBA 690 functional score average International functional score average
Accounting average 48% 65%
Finance average 44% 61%
Strategy average 50% 58%
Marketing average 55% 61%
Operations average 47% 56%
Human resources average 53% 63%

Additionally, students in the undergraduate capstone course, BUS 460, participated in the Capsim.com simulation. In the 2019–20 academic year, undergraduate students achieved the following scores compared to the national average:

Functional area 2019–20 BUS 460 functional score average International functional score average
Accounting average 46% 64%
Finance average 43% 60%
Strategy average 48% 58%
Marketing average 50% 61%
Operations average 44% 56%
Human resources average 50% 62%

College of Communication and Design
Student achievement in the College of Communication and Design is much more qualitative and does not fit well into the quantitative target model. However, student achievement is tracked and monitored. Some metrics include the following:

American Advertising Awards
Students in the College of Communication and Design continue to win American Advertising (ADDY) Awards from the South Florida Chapter.

College of Education
The College of Education tracks job placement rates for recent graduates and performance on the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) and Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE).

Job placement
The threshold of acceptability for job placement was set at 20%. The target placement rate is set to the national average of 60%. The overall placement rate was 70% and exceeded the target. The breakdown by program is as follows:

Program Placement rate
M.Ed. in educational leadership 73%
M.Ed. in exceptional student education 90%
B.S. in elementary education 30%
B.S. in early childhood education 85%

The College of Education also tracks student performance on three sub-parts of the FTCE—General Knowledge (GK), Professional Education (PE) and Exceptional Student Education (ESE)—and the Florida Leadership Examination (FELE). The pass rates from the fall of 2018 through the summer of 2020 are in the following table along with state averages for the same time period.

Exam Score Florida state average
GK 41% 57%
PE 42% 77%
ESE 60% 69%
FELE 55% 64%

The target was to be on par with the state averages; Lynn University fell short on all measures. While the Florida state exams remain, Lynn University now offers the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) prep course every semester and uses the current reported pass rates as the threshold of acceptability for future classes.
