An examination of the transition of journalism from traditional 20th century print and broadcast media through the growth of digitally-based internet-delivered media. Students explore how digital tools which offer professional and lay journalists an expanded set of storytelling options, and delivery routes interact within journalism infrastructure that traditionally serves as a pillar of democracy. In addition to project-based assignments, students examine gatekeeping, media institutions, the public square, politics and daily narratives. Case studies are used to develop strategies for addressing the evolving journalism landscape.
This course offers an overview of media research on cultural differences relating to domestic and international concerns. Theories and research pertaining to international media and multicultural communication are reviewed.
Introduces students to the research process, planning and design. Focuses on methods most relevant to communication and media, including experimental design, content analysis and survey research and examines the historical development of media communication studies in social sciences, humanities and legal areas.
