Professional profile

Dr. Lianfen Qian is a visiting professor in the College of Business and Management. She is a Project NExT Fellow from 1997–1998 chosen by the Mathematical Association of America. Before Lynn University, Qian was the Founder of Math and Data Science LLC, a professor at Florida Atlantic University and a lecturer at Zhejiang University. Qian has developed and taught almost all levels of statistics, actuarial science, data science and analytics courses from undergraduate to Ph.D. levels and successfully supervised many M.S. and four Ph.D. students to completion.

Academically, Qian received her CAPM certificate from the Project Management Institute, Ph.D. in Statistics from Michigan State University, M.S. in Statistics and B.S. in Mathematics from Zhejiang University. She has more than 35 years of professorship in college teaching.

Scholarly, Qian is a well-established researcher in statistics, biostatistics, actuarial science, data mining and analytics with more than 50 refereed journal articles published. Qian’s research focuses on financial time series modeling, structural change detection and estimation in various data types via the parametric and nonparametric approaches. Qian serves as a math appliance mentor, a member of editorial boards for several statistics journals and an American mathematical reviews and technometrics reviewer.

Qian continues to offer her consulting services on the design of a study, data collection, data processing and integration, data visualization and data analysis, predictive modeling and interpretations for undergraduate research-intensive projects, master's theses, doctoral dissertations and industrial projects, as well as AP statistics and mathematics.

Teaching philosophy

Successful teaching is very important to student learning. Qian thinks of teaching as helping students and sharing with students what she has already learned. Dr. Qian loves teaching and interacting with students. From her teaching experience, she has developed the following teaching philosophy:
