Communication and media curriculum

As a communication major, you’ll study effective communication for diverse audiences through a variety of media platforms. Plus, you’ll learn how to recognize trends in communication and media and you’ll gain hands-on learning experience in workshops with well-known companies, such as NPR, The New York Times and ESPN. You’ll acquire all of this knowledge from professors with experience in PR, reporting, producing, product managing, acting and screenwriting.

COM 341: Persuasion and Propaganda
Explore the forces that shape public opinion and spread ideas. Study the role of persuasion and propaganda in politics, advocacy, advertising and public relations, interpersonal communication and the construction of media messages.

COM 350: Communication Law & Ethics
Learn how to avoid legal trouble in your communications with topics in libel law, advertising law, invasion of privacy, copyright and trademark law, First Amendment aspects, the Freedom of Information Act and broadcast regulations.

COM 375: Advertising, Public Relations and Society
Analyze the history, organization and roles of advertising, public relations and social media in American society. Cover media outlets including TV, newspapers, radio and the internet, and gain practical experience by designing an advertising campaign for a contemporary organization.

Graduates must complete a total of 120 credits.
