Holiday leave

Purpose

The purpose of this Policy is to define the University’s policy and guidelines for administering holiday leave.

Policy

All full-time employees (including those in their initial employment period) are eligible for the paid holidays, announced by the President prior to the start of each calendar year.

Employees who are normally paid on an hourly basis and who are required to work on a paid holiday will receive holiday pay equal to their regularly scheduled work hours and receive additional pay for all time worked. Time worked on a paid holiday will be paid at the employee’s normal rate of pay for up to 40 hours in a work week, after which overtime policy (time-and-a-half) will apply. To be counted toward overtime, time must actually be worked; holiday pay will not count toward overtime.

Employees who normally work on a salaried basis (exempt from overtime) and who are required to work on a paid holiday may receive an alternative day off if approved by the supervisor and staffing requirements permit.

Procedures/Guidelines

I. Religious Holidays

Employees desiring to observe a religious holiday not coinciding with an official University holiday may be given time off without pay or may be authorized to take vacation time or personal time. Requests must be made in advance with the supervisor at least ten (10) days prior to the day of religious observance. A request by an employee for time away from work to observe a religious holy day shall not be denied unless the duties performed by the employee are urgently required and the employee is the only person available who can perform the duties as determined by the vice president with oversight responsibilities for the employee’s department.
