Smoking and tobacco use

Purpose

Lynn University is dedicated to promoting a healthy and comfortable environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. To meet this commitment, smoking and tobacco use are prohibited on campus. Research shows tobacco use, in general, constitutes a significant health hazard. This policy is designed to educate and reduce student and employee exposure to the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco use in the educational environment.

Policy

The use of all tobacco products is prohibited in all university facilities and on the grounds of any property owned or leased by Lynn University, except in areas that are designated official smoking areas.

Definitions

Smoking—means inhaling, exhaling, burning, vaporizing, or other personal use of any lit or unlit tobacco or simulated tobacco product, cloves, or concentrates including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigars, hookahs, pipe tobacco, and any other tobacco products or simulated tobacco products.

Tobacco use—means the personal use of any tobacco or simulated tobacco product, whether intended to be lit or not, which includes, but is not limited to smoking, as defined above, the use of any other device intended to simulate smoking, as well as the use of smokeless tobacco, including snuff; chewing tobacco; smokeless pouches; any other form of loose-leaf, smokeless tobacco; and the use of unlit cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco.

Procedures/Guidelines

I. Enforcement

The success of this policy depends upon the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of tobacco users and non-tobacco users. Employees, students, volunteers and guests who observe individuals smoking or using tobacco on campus may decide to respectfully explain that such use is not allowed. Moreover, members of the university community are protected from retaliatory action or from being subjected to any adverse personal action for exercising or attempting to exercise their rights under this policy. If conflicts or concerns result from this explanation to individuals violating this policy, members of the campus community are encouraged to contact Campus Safety for assistance.

Individuals who violate this policy by smoking or using tobacco in the manner prohibited above may be subject to corrective actions consistent with current university procedures that address the violation of any student and employee policy.

Any questions regarding the smoking and tobacco use policy should be directed to the Office of Employee Services.

II. Smoking cessation program

The university is committed to supporting all employees and students who wish to stop using tobacco or nicotine products. Resources to help employees overcome tobacco or nicotine addiction is available through the Office of Employee Services. Information to assist students to overcome tobacco or nicotine addiction is available through the student Health Center.
