Teaching philosophy

As someone with a passion for learning, Shari Bissoondatt understands that it is not always easy. Therefore, she intends to utilize a servant leadership style in the classroom as an instructor. For her, the primary role of a teacher would be to serve her students by creating a safe classroom environment. Building a safe space can foster trusting relationships, equality and equity, and a creative space; all of which are imperative for learning. These aspects of classroom life flamed Shari’s passion for learning.

Additionally, Shari believes in a plural-thinking approach when creating a classroom environment. A classroom is a diverse space. Students, from different cultures, genders and sexual orientations, religious and socio-economic backgrounds, convene in a single room to discuss sensitive, dense materials. To construct a safe space, it is crucial to approach the design with a plural mindset to incorporate as much diversity as possible while remaining adaptable. She reveres education and learning highly; therefore, she wants her students to know that she is there for them, with the added benefit of learning from their experiences.
