Undergraduate Percussion Audition Guidelines

Snare Drum

  1. Rolls of various lengths and dynamics.
  2. One Etude from either of the following:
    • Delecluse, Keiskleiriana or 12 Etudes
  3. A minimum of two orchestral excerpts.
    • Recommended selections: Prokofiev: Lt. Kije Suite, Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherezade, Rimsky-Korsakov: Cappriccio Espagnol, Shostakovich: Symphony #10.
  4. Sight reading.

Mallets

  1. All major and minor scales and arpeggios, two octaves.
  2. One marimba work demonstrating two-mallet proficiency.
    • Recommended selections could include Bach violin or cello pieces.
  3. One marimba or vibraphone work demonstrating four-mallet proficiency.
    • If you choose Bach for your two mallet piece, please choose a contemporary mallet solo for four-mallets.
  4. Two xylophone orchestral excerpts of applicant's choice.
  5. Two glockenspiel orchestral excerpts of applicant's choice.
  6. Sight reading.

Timpani

  1. Tuning of standard intervals (4ths and 5ths etc.) as well as F major scale utilizing 32", 29", & 26" drums.
  2. One etude or solo.
  3. Two orchestral excerpts including one excerpt from a Beethoven Symphony of the applicant's choice.
  4. Sight reading.
