Graduate Piano Audition Guidelines
All compositions should be played from memory.
Technique
All major and minor scales and arpeggios, four octaves.
Baroque
From J.S. Bach, a major suite or Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, or two Scarlatti or two Soler sonatas.
Classical
A complete sonata or set of variations by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert.
Romantic
A substantial composition from the works of such composers as Schumann, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Chopin, Rachmaninov, Mussorgsky, Gottschalk, Alkan or Franck.
20th or 21st Century
A significant composition from a major composer such as Debussy, Ravel, Albeniz, Granados, Ives, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Bartok, Copland, Barber, Ginastera, Messiaen, Tower, Schnittke, Bolcom or Rzewski.
Etude
Virtuosic etude by such composers as Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Ives, Bartok or Ligeti.
