Mission Statement

Institute for Achievement and Learning model, facilities, faculty and staff.

The Institute for Achievement and Learning at Lynn University provides academic resources for students with learning differences or who are seeking to enhance their academic skills and performance. The Institute’s philosophy is to celebrate the individual and help identify the potential in each student. The Institute stands apart from other academic support programs as an academic unit that is fully integrated with all of Lynn’s colleges and academic programs and therefore adheres to the same rigorous academic standards that govern the University. The Institute participates in ongoing research and assessment to ensure the highest quality of service and support for students.

Institute for Achievement and Learning Model

Each student enrolled in the Institute receives an academic Individualized Learning Plan created from the Menu of Services. Students are assigned to a learning advisor who, in conjunction with the Institutes support team, determines an initial learning plan. The plan is modified regularly as a result of ongoing consultation between the student, learning advisor and course instructors. The Menu of Services has been constructed based on current research and serves as an expansion of its previous programs.

The Institute model includes Cognitive Strategy Instruction, specialized learning communities, group activities, course content tutoring, and strategies for planning, organizing and implementing their studies.

Facilities

Facilities include learning labs equipped with specialized software and technology such as Kurzweil readers and, through a gift from the Heller family and Tides Foundation, a diagnostic center and dedicated technology classroom. It is here that students receive their Alpha Profiles, which are personalized learning profiles for incoming freshmen.

Faculty and Staff

The Institute’s staff is committed to the idea that every learner:

  1. possesses a distinct combination of strengths and weaknesses

  2. can maximize the use of their strengths and minimize the impact of their weaknesses in their educational and individual development.

Thus, the Institute strives to help students understand their learning competencies and develop strategies to develop those competencies.

The Institute for Achievement and Learning’s staff teach courses within Lynn’s core curriculum and stay apprised of current research by frequently attending and presenting at professional conferences.

Staff members participate in a variety of on- and off-campus activities to encourage students to fully integrate into the Lynn community. In collaboration with Food For The Poor, students travel abroad during the January Term to serve those in need. Local activities include beach clean-ups, Adopt-a-Spot community beautification projects, recycling efforts and visits to wildlife habitats.
