Show or hide the answer What is the purpose of the Harold, Nathan and Dorothy Wayser Tutoring Center?

The purpose of the Tutoring Center is to provide our students with learning support. The Institute provides students assistance in the areas of subject tutoring, time management skills, study skills, assistive technology, extended time testing and other special accommodations deemed appropriate.

Show or hide the answer Where is the Tutoring Center located?

The Center is located on the second and third floors of the Count and Countess de Hoernle International Building.

Show or hide the answer What are the tutors’ credentials?

Every tutor is required to have either a graduate degree or a professional degree in a specialized subject. Ongoing training is offered to keep the tutors up-to-date on current learning research and teaching strategies. There are several tutors available for each subject area, and if a student’s learning style does not mesh well with a tutor’s style, another tutor is always available.

Show or hide the answer Does the tutoring program monitor students’ participation?

Yes. While the student is responsible for scheduling and keeping tutoring appointments, the Institute staff constantly reminds them in person or by phone that their participation is important to their success at Lynn University. If a student misses an appointment, there will be an immediate follow up call to make sure that the student is aware of the appointment. If the student misses their appointment twice, the right to cancel the appointment is reserved at that time. The student can reschedule but must see a staff member to do so. Detailed attendance records are maintained on students enrolled in the Institute.

Show or hide the answer How are parents kept up-to-date on their son or daughter’s participation and achievement at the Tutoring Center?

After two weeks of classes, letters will be sent home regarding students who are not keeping their tutoring appointments. Parents who receive these letters are urged to encourage their son/daughter to attend tutoring appointments. In addition, a midterm mailing from the Tutoring and Testing Centers will be sent to all parents. This mailing will contain a report on the student’s participation at both Centers.

Show or hide the answer How can parents contact the Tutoring Center to find out about their son or daughter’s participation?

The director of the Tutoring Center can be reached at 561-237-7087 or fpanico@lynn.edu between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Show or hide the answer Whose responsibility is it to make appointments at the Tutoring Center?

It is the responsibility of the student to sign up for tutoring by contacting the director, the only exception being for first year students who begin in the fall term and are informed of their tutoring sessions in their Self as Learner class.

Show or hide the answer What help is available to students who need assistance with time management, study skills or organizational skills?

The tutoring program schedules an “Empower Hour” session for all incoming first year students.  This is a required session that includes time management, study skills, organizational skills and assistive technology training. The time management session encourages the student to enter important dates in a day planner. The student and the tutor then monitor projects due so that he/she can better prepare for upcoming assignments. In addition, any student enrolled in the Institute can schedule sessions for time management or study skills.

Show or hide the answer Where is the Testing Center located?

The Testing Center is located on the third floor of the Count and Countess de Hoernle International Center.

Show or hide the answer Who determines whether a student is entitled to additional accommodations when he/she is taking a test?

Accommodations are determined by the Institute administrators.  If additional accommodations are determined, they will be provided by our tutoring staff.

Show or hide the answer What is a “Z” section? How involved in the program are the “Z” section classroom instructors?

The Institute has identified instructors who have expressed an interest in working with students who have a variety of learning styles. The classes assigned to these instructors are designated as “Z” sections. All “Z” class instructors are required to complete training through the Institute’s Fellows’ program.  They are asked to complete Smartboard classroom training, integrate technology and varying learning strategies in their teaching and utilize multiple assessments in grading.

Show or hide the answer Is an advisor assigned specifically to a student?

Yes, an academic advisor is assigned to each freshman student through the Academic Advising Center (separate from the Institute). In addition, students develop close relationships with their tutors and program advisors in the Institute. Within the first month of school, most students have a tutor with whom they have developed a close relationship.
