New Music Festival

2010 New Music Festival PosterExposure and immersion in contemporary music is vital to the successful 21st century musician. Both the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic opened their 2009 season with a world premiere. We want our students to be confident in the preparation and performance of modern compositions of diverse styles. To that end, we commission a new work each year from a different composer who takes residency on the campus for the week of the festival, coaching students in preparation for the concerts.

The Festival includes four concerts:
  • Opening night features the faculty in a varied program of their favorite contemporary music.
  • The Contemporary Music Forum features avant-garde music performed by students who participate in a lively three-way panel discussion between the performer, the audience and the distinguished panel chaired by the composer-in-residence.
  • The Spotlight on Young Composers features the work of student composers from Lynn and institutions around the world performed by their peers.
  • The Spotlight on the Composer-in-Residence features the commissioned work on a program celebrating the featured composer’s work.
