New Music Festival
Exposure and immersion in contemporary music is vital to the successful 21st century musician. Both the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic opened their 2009 season with a world premiere. We want our students to be confident in the preparation and performance of modern compositions of diverse styles. To that end, we commission a new work each year from a different composer who takes residency on the campus for the week of the festival, coaching students in preparation for the concerts.
The Festival includes four concerts:
- Opening night features the faculty in a varied program of their favorite contemporary music.
- The Contemporary Music Forum features avant-garde music performed by students who participate in a lively three-way panel discussion between the performer, the audience and the distinguished panel chaired by the composer-in-residence.
- The Spotlight on Young Composers features the work of student composers from Lynn and institutions around the world performed by their peers.
- The Spotlight on the Composer-in-Residence features the commissioned work on a program celebrating the featured composer’s work.
