Our Baseball Winter Meetings event is a one-of-a-kind educational experience, where students have met with baseball’s top business executives—including team owners, league presidents, sports agents, baseball writers and even the president of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

We’ll work with you to find your particular interests in the sports world so that your course work, electives and internships reflect your passion. As a sports management major, your focused classes will cover topics in marketing, law, sales, media relations, event operations and league governance. A strong foundation in business management will get you ready for the big game.

The specialization in sports management will add to the management skills you’ve already gained through your personal experience and undergraduate studies. You’ll take detailed courses that investigate advanced administrative situations, including evaluating athletics teams, creating business plans and buying/selling teams. You’ll spend time considering ethical and legal issues of collegiate and professional sports. Plus, you’ll participate in a sports internship that will provide more than just a valuable hands-on education—it will help you network within the field, too.

MBA in Sports Management: Curriculum

All MBA students will complete a series of seven foundational courses that provide a knowledge of business and management with topics in marketing, human resources and financial accountability.

Courses specific to the MBA in Sports Management program:

SAM 530: Sports Administration
Application of management theory and practice to sports administration. Emphasis on organizing, structuring and maintaining a successful department. Day-to-day operations reviewed along with facility management, fiscal and budgetary aspects, personnel selection and supervision, public relations, and office management.

SAM 535: Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics and Professional Sports
An overview of critical issues of national interest in both collegiate and professional sports: Title IX, Gender Equity, scholarships and payment of athletes, recruiting policies, professional agents, and other current matters of prime importance in the field.

SAM 680: Beginning Internship in Sports and Athletics Administration
The internship provides an opportunity to apply beginning knowledge and theory to professional practice. Prerequisites: Permission of college internship liaison, 2.5 cumulative GPA in major and/or departmental approval.

SAM 681: Advanced Internship in Sports and Athletics Administration
The internship provides an opportunity to apply advanced knowledge and theory to professional practice.

MBA in Sports Management: Requirements

Graduates of the MBA in Sports Management program must complete 12 three-credit courses, which include six foundational courses (21 credits), three sports management specialization courses (9 credits) and two electives (6 credits).
