Kelly_HuiKelly Hui, a senior at Lynn University, was selected for the second straight year to receive a $2,400 UPS Scholarship provided through the Florida Independent College Fund. She is one of 29 students from Florida independent colleges to receive the award.

Hui is originally from Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. and a 2008 graduate of Sachem North High School. She is working on her Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in International Business. Hui hopes to continue on to a master’s degree in pharmacy and eventually open a consulting firm that will help pharmaceutical/medical companies expand their business outside of their home countries.

Born and raised on New York’s Long Island, Hui is the daughter of Joseph and Kim Hui. Her father is a maintenance worker and her mother is a hospital lab director.

“This scholarship has helped me concentrate better on school and work since I don’t have to worry about my financial situation as much,” Hui said. “The fact that the generosity of others is helping me afford school makes me understand the importance of giving back to the community. I plan to give back as soon as I start earning money in my career.”

This scholarship is the latest honor Hui has earned. She was also the Lynn Student Employee of the Year last year. In her nomination for the award, she was recognized for a “combination of enthusiasm, positive attitude and attention to detail.” She works at Lynn’s Student Administrative Services (SAS) part time, and her duties include analyzing reports and spreadsheets, customer service to students and parents at the SAS counter and training new student employees.

“Kelly is an excellent student and employee,” Evelyn Nelson, executive director of SAS, said. “She adds a lot to our office and takes her studies seriously. I am so proud of her, and we were happy she earned this scholarship for the second straight year.”

the Florida Independent College Fund and UPS scholarship

The Florida Independent College Fund is a statewide association for private colleges and universities that is affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). At the national level, CIC teams up with the UPS Foundation to distribute funding of the UPS Scholarship. This year, CIC awarded nearly $1.45 million in scholarships from its UPS Educational Endowment Fund to private institutions of higher learning across the nation, including a grant of $69,600 to the Florida Independent College Fund. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of the students’ academic achievement and financial need.

The UPS Educational Endowment Fund, which is held and administered by CIC, was established in the 1980s through endowment gifts from the UPS Foundation totaling $4 million and is now valued at $39 million. Since its inception, this fund has awarded $48 million in scholarship support to over 16,000 students nationwide.

“A college degree opens the door to countless opportunities,” said Ken Sternad, president of the UPS Foundation. “UPS takes great pride in our partnership with CIC and in our support of thousands of students over the years who have been able to pursue an education from our nation’s private colleges.”

“This joint UPS / CIC scholarship program has a direct, tangible impact on the education and careers of hundreds of young men and women each year,” said Richard Ekman, president of CIC. “Because so many young men and women don’t have the financial resources to complete their college education, the UPS Scholarships are critically important.”
