Lynn University’s Conservatory of Music celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Guest Pianist Weekend with British pianist Philip Fowke, who will perform a recital on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m., and give two master classes on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall in the de Hoernle International Center on campus.
Fowke originally studied with the Royal Academy of Music. Following his top performances at the BBC Piano Competition and the Sydney International Piano Competition, he enjoyed roles playing with the BBC Scottish Symphony and the London Piano Quartet, and taught at the Trinity College of Music.
His recital program consists of 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs by Bela Bartok; Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23 by Frederic Chopin; Ballade No. 3 in A-flat major, Op. 47 and Andante Spianato & Grande Polonaise, Op. 22. During the Art of Encore part of the recital, music associated with some of the great pianists of the past including Dohnanyi, Grieg, Moszkowski, Paderewski, Rachmaninoff and Sinding, will be performed.
“In the last few years I have become increasingly aware of the wealth of smaller works which enjoyed great popularity in the earlier part of the last century,” said Fowke. “Pianists of the day championed them and often became associated with particular pieces and contributed their own compositions and arrangements to the genre.”
