Chemistry professor's research could save lives in Third World nations

Lynn chemistry professor and chair of the science department, Khalique Ahmed, is more than just the 2009 faculty member of the year co-winner recognized for his teaching effectiveness, scholarly and research activity, and service to the Lynn and greater community. He's also a marathon runner that has been part of several Lynn events including Founders Day and Alumni Weekend.
Ahmed's research includes a newly patented process for screening cough syrup for the presence of a dangerous ingredient – a discovery that might help save lives in Third World countries that don't have sophisticated laboratory equipment.
As a marathon runner, Ahmed pledged to run 2020 kilometers in 2009-10 honoring Lynn's 2020 strategic plan. So far, Ahmed has completed 919.6 kilometers of his goal. He plans to reach over 1000 kms by the end ofDecember and will complete all 2020 kms before the end of the academic year in May 2010 when the temperature in South Florida is more forgiving. "It's like a New Year's resolution," said Ahmed, "but it's a New 'Academic' Year's resolution."
Ahmed officially began clocking his miles (or kilometers) on June 1, 2009. "I wanted to start the 2009-10 academic year on the right foot, literally," he says. To track Ahmed's progress, you can follow him on twitter @Lynn2020Run.
Source: Ahmed, a professor of science, teaches chemistry and physics. He has more than 20 years combined teaching, research and administrative experience – nine of which have been at Lynn. His research is focused on the application of vibrational spectroscopy in the understanding of the basic and applied problems.
