Professional Profile

When teaching students I always endeavor to make the curriculum authentic and personal and my delivery of content innovative and exciting. Lynn University values such an approach. The university also embraces diversity, which strengthens the student body and the classroom experience. Teaching, learning and opportunities for research and publication in collaboration with students highlights why I am at Lynn.

Valerie A. Storey, Ph.D., Associate professor in the Ross College of Education at Lynn University is the coordinator of the Master’s in Educational Leadership program and is currently working with the Carnegie Foundation on the development of an innovative scholar-practitioner Ed.D program (The Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate). Storey earned her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. In public schools, Storey has served as an instructional leader at both the school and district level including appointments as the executive assistant to the chief education director of her school district for the management of strategies for disaffected students and Education Action Zones. She began her career teaching ESE students and became the director of an ESE faculty. She has subject specialism expertise in the teaching of specific learning difficulties, gifted students, English and Psychology. Her most recent school practitioner appointment was as leader of curriculum studies at the high school level. At the university level, she has been consultant and adjunct faculty at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University.

Storey was in an early cohort of school leaders in the United Kingdom to take the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and has continued her links with the National College for School Leadership, UK by establishing a prestigious international partnership between NCSL and the Ross College of Education. Her research interests reside in two main areas. One centers on school improvement with special emphasis on educational leadership and policy development, both domestically and internationally. She has authored, co-authored and published articles which center on leadership for learning and teaching in K-12 schools. Much of her other scholarly work focuses on the changing role of school leaders as the organizational context becomes more standardized, but at the same time more complex and varied. Her research examines how principals (extended to healthcare leaders) develop the values that inform their decisions; in addition, she studies the organizational features of schools and leadership that impact student achievement. The focus of her current research is the development of a “Values Informed Decision Model” for education and healthcare leaders. Recent involvement in online learning has led to research on moral decision making and integrity in relation to virtual worlds. She is an active member of New DEEL (Democratic, Education, Ethical Leadership), a movement focusing on leadership in schools, in higher education and in the wider community, which promotes democratic action using a moral framework. Advocates of the New DEEL recognize that uniformity is not equality; as such, Storey promotes personalization of student learning at all levels. Programs delivered by Storey meet individual and personal as well as site needs while satisfying state and federal leadership standards.

Teaching Philosophy
As the main institution for fostering social cohesion in our diverse society, schools must serve all children. This means addressing the cognitive and social needs of all children to ensure that they become actively engaged democratic citizens. It is incumbent on all educators to deliver a personalized curriculum that meets individual student learning needs and utilizes advanced e-pedagogy and associated technologies. As a veteran K-12 school teacher, school leader and currently a “teacher of teachers” it becomes evident that I’ve committed my entire life to teaching in an effort to communicate to others my love of learning. I rejoice in the fact that I’m now in the position to influence future leader educators as they also strive to impart in their students and colleagues a similar love of learning.
