Professional Profile
As a former CEO who later became a professor, Eldon Bernstein tries to give students the benefit of years of experience managing a business and interacting with many elements of the business community.
During his years as CEO, Bernstein did everything that he now teaches. He has run an importing business in addition to domestic distribution. His teaching style stresses fairness to all with an emphasis on the professor as mentor and representative of the business world the student hopes to enter.

Teaching Philosophy
Teaching should motivate the student to search deeper into topics and to want to acquire the skills that led to successful business careers. The student should be inspired to enjoy learning and enjoy being challenged to ever increasing levels of inquiry and analysis.
I usually start classes by asking “Who would be happy to have a final grade of B in this course?” To those who respond “Yes,” I remind them that a B grade represents fulfillment of 80 percent of an assignment; in business, that will either result in your not getting hired, getting stuck in a job or possibly losing it to someone who is only content to get an A, or to reach 100 percent.
Teaching Specialties
- Strategic management
- The history of U.S. business
