Teaching Philosophy
In the classroom, my goal is to foster critical reasoning skills, to facilitate the acquisition of lifelong learning skills, to prepare students to effectively function with technology and to help students to reason with quantitative information. Quantitative reasoning requires the use of technology (calculators and computers) to process data. The required use of programs such as Excel, PowerPoint and MyMathLab ensure the students’ mastery of the embedded core competencies required in a dialogue course. I extensively utilize all elements of Smart Board interactive software to present material in class. The presentation of notes on the Smart Board is an integral part of the delivery of concepts to students during class. These notes are saved as a downloadable file and posted on MyLynn Blackboard for students to retrieve and print at any time. I attempt to use humor, singing and current events in my presentations to spark student interest and make the lesson engaging. Through a first class assignment where students post their introductory statement, the students share with their classmates some personal information on the discussion board. I use this information to engage students personally and relate the course to their experiences. If I know where the student is coming from, it helps me to get them to where they’re going. I am fortunate to be a teacher of today who has the privilege to mentor the students who will become the leaders of tomorrow.
