Professional Profile
Dr. Craig A. Mertler began his career in education in 1986 as a high school biology and earth sciences teacher in southeast Ohio. While teaching high school students in grades 10-12, he also supervised numerous students groups and coached volleyball and track. Following the completion of a Master of Arts degree in educational research and evaluation, he worked at an federally-funded educational improvement laboratory in Tallahassee, FL, conducting evaluation studies of educational programs in the Southeast U.S. In 1996, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Measurement and Evaluation and began his career in higher education. During the next 13 years at Bowling Green (OH) State University, Dr. Mertler taught courses in quantitative research methods, introductory statistical analysis, multivariate statistical analysis, and educational assessment methods. He also teaches courses focused on the application of action research to promote data-driven educational decision making and transformational innovations in education. From 2009-2011, he served as the director of the doctoral program in school improvement at the University of West Georgia, where he led a comprehensive effort to transform the face-to-face, regional program into an online, national program. Dr. Mertler came in Lynn University in 2011 to serve as the Dean of the Ross College of Education.
Dr. Mertler is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including AERA, MWERA, and ASCD. He has served as Program Chair and President of the Mid-Western Educational Research Association (MWERA) and has delivered the keynote address to the Eastern Educational Research Association (EERA). He is the author of 13 books, four invited book chapters, 16 refereed journal articles, two instructors’ manuals, and numerous nonrefereed articles and manuscripts. He has also presented numerous research papers at professional meetings around the country, as well as internationally. He consults with schools and districts and conducts workshops for in-service educational professionals on classroom-based action research and on the broad topic of classroom assessment. In his leisure time, he enjoys travelling with his family and playing golf.
